This photograph taken at a telephone exchange in Brisbane in 1910, was produced by the National Archives of Australia. This visual primary source depicts a row of women working in a telephone exchange in the 1900's with two other women, who appear to be supervisors overlooking the telephone operators, whilst completing their task. The source demonstrates how women in the early 1900's worked together and highlights the beginnings of women in the labour force. Working as a telephone operator in this time period would have been difficult and a challenge as the telephone lines were manually connected and operated. This would have also challenged the idealistic and stereotypical image of women as dependant and house wives. This aspect of life in the beginnings of the 20th century demonstrates that women were beginning to gain independence, particularly financial independence as they were now a part of the growing economy of Australia. This also shows how telephones were becoming an increasingly popular form of communication, as well as a big progress for Australia itself.
